I hear ya there. I got sick of it all myself. If you haven't yet, you all should read my blogs. A couple of them touch on this subject.

I'm going to wear my converse and my slayer shirts even when I'm 40! It's our right to be ourselves.

I am glad that we have a place to talk about things. I mean I have a daughter who isn't into the goth scene, and I almost wished she would. So I can live through her. LOL. I came from a very strict house, and one day I was about 14 or 15 I put white powder on my face and really dark eye shadow and went down stairs and out the door......only to have my mom grab my hair and send me right back in the house to get that "shit" off my face.

Why, thank you. That's why I love this site. People here seem to appreciate a bad attitude. I just call it like I see it. If I'm an asshole for that, so be it. But at least I know I'm not the only one feeling like I do.........

Tired of trying to conform
I'm 49 years old.  With that said, I have come to a point in my life where I am sick and tired of trying to conform to society's standards of what a middle aged woman should act like and look like!  I was goth way before goth was even thought of and have spent the last 20 years of so tryng to be something I'm not, so damn them all, I'm wearing my black nail polish, pentagram pendant and cross earings whether the young uns look at me funny or not!   I'd love to hear others stories, please share!

You all sound like my kind of people.

Damn the mainstream, shun the pain of the mundane. And to hell with the "Act your age" mantra, what exactly is that supposed to mean anyway? Where is it defined how a certain age should behave? And by whose standards?

I think it's more important to just be what you are than to "act" in any particular manner. Acting is artificial. People who say "Act your age" are actually saying, "Be phony" and "Be superficial". How nice.

For one example, I've been a rocker ever since I was a teenager, and that will never change. I'm 45 now, but I still feel like a 21 year old in many ways. (It's a shame that the body degrades while the mind improves, but that's life.) On a down note, I can never really "be" what I "am", that is, what I feel like in the inside, and I have to accept the body and features that nature have given me. If it were up to me, I'd have long thick black hair down to my waist and a great singing voice. but...oh well ..

On a lighter note, I just bought the Addams Family DVD last week, (the '60s TV series), and man, watching that, I think Morticia helped to define "Goth" in a lot of ways - the black, the macabre, the appreciation of avant garde, and so on. Damn, she was downright sexy, actually. And that was in the sixties!

Long live Goth, and long live Gothers. Be long lived !
