Actors. You need immediate response and not a "canned" one for each encounter. Plus actors will be able to react differently to individual circumstances. But, you need good actors.

Animatronics
I personally like totally automated haunts. I don't like to rely on live actors totally. I have been let down all too often and when people you are counting on fail to show up your haunt suffers. I like to have my haunts totally automated (not static). I then try to supplement with live actors. But even if none show up then I know my haunt will at least be at a certain level above crappy.

I think you need a good balance of both! And that way, if someone doesn't show up. Usually it makes it easier to cover. If I had to go with one or the other, I would have to go with live actors.
