Just my humble opinion ... for what it's worth!
Posted On 06/27/2007 00:29:43 by FireWoman9

I've thought about this tragedy all day and didn't quite know how to express what I was feeling ... how to put it all into words ... but I'll try now. I'm not trying to offend anyone. These are simply my feelings and my opinions.

I've been a wrestling fan for many years ... beginning when I was a little girl and watching Saturday Night Wrestling with my dad and uncle! Back then it was Fritz Von Erich, Wahoo McDaniel, Cowboy Bob Ellis, Duke Keomuka, Ray Gunkle. Then, I "graduated" to the Von Erich boys ... Kevin, David, Kerry, Mike and Chris. (Kerry was my favorite ... he was my "dream man"! That's when I began going to the Sportatorium in Dallas every Friday night!)

I watched epic battles between the Von Erichs and the Freebirds, saw Stone Cold Steve Austin (back then known as Steve Williams) fight his very first professional match ever right after he finished Chris Adams' wrestling school. I cheered on Brusier Brody as he fought Kimala, The Ugandan Giant. I gazed in wonder at The Great Kabuki as his breathed his "green smoke" into the air. I watched the Rock & Roll Express (Shawn Michaels) battle the Super D's for the tag team title. I screamed my bloody head off as The Ultimate Warrior (back then known as The Dingo Warrior) teamed up with The Modern Day Warrior, Kerry Von Erich, to battle Terry Gordy and Michael Hayes. I gasped in horror as The Undertaker made his first walk down the aisle to the ring with Paul Bearer (in those days, he was known as Percy Pringle).

In May 1984, along with 63,000 other fans at Texas Stadium, I sat five rows from the ring and watched Kerry Von Erich defeat Ric Flair for the NWA World Championship in honor of his late brother, David. At the same card, in a 6-man tag team match with his sons Kevin and Mike, I got to see Fritz Von Erich in his final professional match put the Iron Claw on Michael Hayes and defeat the Freebirds to win the NWA World Tag Team title! (As a side bar to all you rockers: I started out on the seventh row but wound up on the fifth row because Twisted Sister guitarist, Jay Jay French, was at the match and I'm the only one who knew who he was! I yelled out his name and his bodyguard invited me to sit with them ... so I moved up a couple of rows!!)

I was in the building for the first Dallas matches of Dustin Rhodes (Golddust), Jeff Jarrett, Cactus Jack (Mick Foley), Gino Heranadez, The Guerrero Brothers, Jimmy Garvin with valet Sunshine, John Tatum with valet Missy Hyatt, Barry Wyndham (one time only and I LOVED him), Jerry "The King" Lawler, Matt Bourne (Doink, The Clown) and Andre the Giant. I got to see all the great ones!!

I idolized these guys. I thought they were the ultimate heroes ... which, in my eyes, made them the ultimate men. It wasn't until I met and became very good friends with the time keeper/bell ringer and his wife that my opinion started to change. Spending time with them meant that I got to spend time with some of the wrestlers and let me tell you, they were some messed up dudes! Drugs were rampant, EVERYONE used steroids, true personalities shown through ... and they weren't good! Professional wrestling, for all it's apparent glitz and glamour, is really a depressing, injury-riddled, marriage ending, LIFE ending, heartbreaking business. It's all about being bigger, being stronger, being faster, being more bizarre ... and, for some of those guys, the pressure makes them crack.

I think that's what happened in Chris Benoit's case. It's been the case with so many other wrestlers, as well. 'Roid Rage is very real and it causes otherwise normal men to turn into out of control animals. Other wrestlers (yes, that includes my all-time personal favorite, Kerry Von Erich) have committed suicide. While I don't condone suicide for ANYONE (short of someone who is terminally ill ... but that is a whole other can of worms) the only saving grace for those guys is that THEY DIDN'T KILL THEIR FAMILIES! They didn't kill their CHILDREN.

In light of the circumstances surrounding the Benoits' deaths, does it make Chris' record in the wrestling ring any less impressive? No ... he was an incredible wrestler as far as ENTERTAINMENT/CHOREOGRAPHED wrestling goes. Does him taking the lives of his wife and innocent son make him less of a man? HELL, YES! It sure does. I don't have much respect for professional wrestlers to begin with because I've been in the locker rooms with them. I've been in bars and restaurants with them. I've witnessed their debauchery and I know what they are capable of doing. After what Chris did, great WRESTLER or not, I have zero respect for him as a man, a husband, a father, a human. He knew very well what mixing steroids and alcohol do but he chose to mix them anyway TO BE BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER, MORE BIZARRE ... and make more money! In the end, all he did was ruin his reputation as a great wrestler/entertainer and break the hearts of millions of people who looked up to him. Is he really the kind of man we want our children to remember as a great MAN at this point? I think not ...

Remember Michael Irvin from the Dallas Cowboys? I'll bet your first thought of him is NOT that he is a Hall of Fame wide receiver and a member of "The Triplets" that won the Cowboys three Superbowls in four years! Your first thought is "Yeah ... that Michael Irvin was a dope head! He got busted with a stripper snorting coke behind a topless bar!" Doesn't make any difference how great of an athlete you are ... if you screw up, that's how you're going to be remembered. Chris Benoit was a great wrestler who will now, sadly, always be remembered for being a murderer ... a man who, instead of just killing himself, chose to be a total coward and kill his wife and child when they didn't deserve to die! I would hate to be in his shoes at this moment ...

May the souls of his beautiful wife and sweet little boy rest in peace.

June 27, 2007 11:23 PM PST]: Details continue to come in regarding the double murder-suicide of Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and their son Daniel, all of whom were found dead in their home on Monday.

The WWE published the text messages that Benoit sent to co-workers:

Text Message 1 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53am)- Chris Benoit’s cell phone “My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”

Text Message 2 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53am)- Chris Benoit’s cell phone “The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open”

Text Message 3 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:54am)- Nancy Benoit’s cell phone “My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane. Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”

Text Message 4 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:55am)- Nancy Benoit’s cell phone “My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane. Fayetteville Georgia. 30215"

Text Message 5 to one co-worker (sent 6/24 at 3:58am)- Nancy Benoit’s cell phone “My address is 130 Green Meadow Lane. Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”

ESPN.com is reporting that District Attorney Scott Ballard said Daniel (who was seven years old), had needle marks on his arm. He believed that the boy had been given growth hormones for some time because the family considered him undersized.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Pope said they found all three bodies in the home mid-afternoon after a call from Richard Hering of WWE at 2:30 to check on them. “Double Homicide Suicide” is the official ruling.

It was said that Benoit killed his wife on Friday, his son Daniel the next day, then hanged himself either late Saturday night or early Sunday from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment. Benoit used weights, the pulley, and a cable to choke himself to death in his basement weight room. Toxicology reports can take up to several weeks to obtain. Asphyxiation (killing by depriving of oxygen) is the official ruling for Benoit’s wife and son deaths. There was no suicide note found.

Benoit was arrested for a DUI in the past, but there were no calls to his current residence for domestic abuse. However, a report from the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution states that Nancy Benoit filed for divorce in May 2003 and cited domestic abuse in her court filings. According to the report, she got a restraining order on May 12, 2003 against Chris Benoit. In the divorce petition, Nancy Benoit alleged that Chris Benoit, "lost his temper and threatened to strike the petitioner and cause extensive damage to the home and personal belongings of the parties, including furniture and furnishings. Petitioner is in reasonable fear for petitioner's own safety and that of the minor child." However, on August 19, 2003, Nancy Benoit filed to dismiss the divorce petition and the restraining order. Other than the separation for those three months in 2003, Chris and Nancy lived together since 1997. The couple had married in 2000.

A lot of prescription medication was found at the crime scene that were believed to be legal prescriptions. Anabolic steroids were also found, however those are believed to be prescribed as well. WWE responded to stories that the deaths may have been due to "roid rage" by issuing a press release where they said they were "concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney". Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix wrote an interesting article about steroids and professional wrestling and pondered if it's time for Congress to step in. You can read the full article by clicking here.

So far there has been no comment from the police on a possible motive or the contents of the text message that Benoit had sent to a friend (believed to be Chavo Guerrero). The friend saw the text message hours after it was received. PWTorch is reporting that one of the text messages said that the sliding glass doors to his [Benoit's] house were open and the dogs had been fed. No one was quite sure what to make of it, but he wasn't reachable afterward for clarification. Concerns over the messages were sent to WWE representative Richard Hering. Regarding the messages, D.A. Ballard said that the "assumption is that that was an effort to try to get somebody to come find the bodies after the suicide. That is our assumption."

Several hours passed, no more than a day, between the son's death and Benoit's. The wife's body was found in the office area, Daniel in his bedroom, and Benoit in the basement home gym. He estimates close to a full day between the deaths of his wife and son. The doctor from the crime lab estimates Nancy died some time on Friday. The decomposition of the bodies was staggered enough for them to determine the staggered times of deaths.

District Attorney Scott Ballard stated that a Bible was placed near each murder victim. There was no bible found near Chris Benoit's body, however.

Benoit tied Nancy's hands and feet and she was wrapped in a towel. Blood was found near Nancy's body and on her face. There was no evidence of Nancy resisting. District Attorney Scott Ballard told ABC News in an interview after the press conference that "the medical examiner found bruising on the small of her back and bruising on the front of her body consistent with being crushed up against the floor". Benoit made no attempt to hide the bodies. Benoit was not at the Smackdown/ECW house show in Beaumont on Saturday, or in Houston for the Vengeance PPV, informing WWE that he had a family emergency. Apparently he told WWE that Daniel was coughing up blood, thus likely the 'personal reasons' for missing weekend house shows.

One source told TMZ that Benoit was texting friends during Sunday's WWE "Vengeance" Pay-Per-View -- possibly watching the show with his son, who may have been alive at the time.

As of Monday night, WWE removed all Chris Benoit merchandise from their website, as well as removing. They also removed the 'I Did It' T-Shirts, which were associated with the Vince McMahon death storyline. On Tuesday, they began removing articles and galleries associated with Chris Benoit, replacing them with promotional articles. They also removed their tribute to Benoit late this morning. Benoit's profile on the ECW website section has been removed as well. However, their press release about the tragedy remains on the home page of their website.

WWE officials in Corpus Christi were informed of the deaths at 4:00 p.m on Monday. WWE then held a meeting with wrestlers and talent, informing them of the deaths. WWE scrapped it's plans for Raw that night and made it a tribute to Chris Benoit and his family. Fans were sent home. Wrestlers were also allowed to leave and mourn. American Bank Center has scheduled a new date for the event for July 16th at 6:30pm. Tickets for the June 25th postponed date will still be honored.

WWE had released the following statement Monday night:

"Chris was beloved among his fellow Superstars, and was a favorite among WWE fans for his unbelievable athleticism and wrestling ability. He always took great pride in his performance, and always showed respect for the business he loved, for his peers and towards his fans. This is a terrible tragedy and an unbearable loss. WWE extends its sincere condolences and prayers to the Benoit family and loved ones in this time of tragedy."

We here at WrestlingInc.com would like to offer our condolences to all the family and friends affected during this tragic time.
